BIP39 MNEMONIC GENERATOR

Generate secure BIP39 mnemonic seed phrases for cryptocurrency wallets. Create 12 or 24-word recovery phrases compatible with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other crypto wallets. This client-side tool ensures your seed phrase never leaves your device, providing maximum security for wallet backup and recovery.

ABOUT BIP39 Mnemonic Generator

What is BIP39?

Generate BIP39 mnemonic seed phrases for cryptocurrency wallets. Creates cryptographically secure word sequences.

How Does BIP39 Work?

The BIP39 standard converts cryptographic entropy (random data) into a mnemonic phrase using a predefined wordlist of 2048 English words. The process generates entropy, calculates a checksum, and maps the combined binary data to words from the BIP39 wordlist. This mnemonic can then be combined with an optional passphrase to derive a seed, which serves as the master key for generating all cryptocurrency addresses in a hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet.

Mnemonic Length & Security

  • 12 words (128 bits): Standard security level, suitable for most users. Provides 2^128 possible combinations.
  • 15 words (160 bits): Enhanced security with increased entropy.
  • 18 words (192 bits): High security for valuable holdings.
  • 21 words (224 bits): Very high security for institutional use.
  • 24 words (256 bits): Maximum security, equivalent to 256-bit encryption. Recommended for large cryptocurrency holdings.

BIP39 Passphrase (25th Word)

BIP39 supports an optional passphrase (sometimes called the "25th word") that adds an extra layer of security. This passphrase combines with your mnemonic to generate a completely different set of wallet addresses. Benefits include plausible deniability (you can have a decoy wallet with no passphrase and a hidden wallet with a passphrase) and additional protection against physical theft of your seed phrase. Important: losing your passphrase means permanent loss of access to those funds.

Security Best Practices

  • Never share your seed phrase: Anyone with your mnemonic can access all funds in your wallet. Treat it like cash.
  • Offline generation: For production wallets, generate mnemonics on an air-gapped computer never connected to the internet.
  • Physical backup: Write your seed phrase on paper or metal and store it in a secure location. Consider using fireproof/waterproof storage.
  • Avoid digital storage: Never store your mnemonic in cloud services, email, or unencrypted digital files.
  • Verify your backup: Before funding a wallet, verify you can recover it using your backed-up mnemonic.
  • Beware of phishing: Legitimate wallet applications never ask you to enter your seed phrase online.

Common Use Cases

  • Wallet backup: Create a human-readable backup for hardware wallets like Ledger or Trezor.
  • Wallet recovery: Restore access to cryptocurrency funds after device loss or failure.
  • Multi-wallet support: Use the same seed phrase across different wallet applications and blockchain networks.
  • Inheritance planning: Provide a secure, standardized way to pass cryptocurrency access to heirs.
  • Testing and development: Generate deterministic wallets for cryptocurrency application development.

Client-Side Security

This BIP39 generator runs entirely in your browser with zero server communication. All entropy generation, mnemonic creation, and seed derivation happen locally on your device. Your seed phrase never leaves your computer, ensuring maximum privacy and security. For production use, we recommend downloading this page and running it offline or using a dedicated hardware wallet that implements BIP39 in a secure element.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This tool is provided for educational and testing purposes. While it implements BIP39 correctly and runs client-side for security, online generation of mnemonics carries inherent risks. For securing significant cryptocurrency holdings, always use a hardware wallet or generate mnemonics on an air-gapped, offline device. Never use mnemonics generated on untrusted computers or compromised networks.
