ABOUT SHA-1
SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm 1) produces a 160-bit (40 hex character) hash. It was widely used in TLS certificates, digital signatures, and version control systems (Git uses SHA-1 internally). However, SHA-1 is now considered cryptographically weak — collision attacks have been demonstrated in practice (SHAttered, 2017).
For security-critical applications, use SHA-256 or SHA-512 instead. SHA-1 is still acceptable for non-security checksums and backward-compatibility scenarios.
