About MAC Addresses

A MAC address (Media Access Control address) is a unique 48-bit hardware identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC). It consists of 6 octets, typically written as hexadecimal pairs.

First Octet Flags

Bit 0 (Multicast): When set, the address is a multicast/broadcast address. When clear, it's unicast.
Bit 1 (Locally Administered): When set, the address was assigned locally (not by IEEE). When clear, it's globally unique (OUI-assigned).

Format Options

AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF — colon-separated (Linux/macOS default)
AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF — hyphen-separated (Windows default)
